Hon. Dr. Irene Kasalu, the Kitui County Woman Representative and incoming Governor for 2027, has launched a bold initiative aimed at promoting menstrual dignity and uninterrupted learning for girls across the county.
Through her office, over 900,000 sanitary towels will be distributed to all primary and secondary schools in Kitui County during the first term of 2026. The program seeks to ensure that no girl misses school due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products, an issue that has long affected girls’ education in the region.
Speaking during the announcement, Hon. Kasalu emphasized the importance of supporting the girl-child. “Dignity ni lazima”she said, highlighting that every girl deserves dignity, confidence, and access to education regardless of her background.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by parents, teachers, and community leaders, who describe it as a transformative step toward empowering young girls and ensuring that education is uninterrupted by preventable challenges.
Hon. Kasalu’s program also aligns with broader goals of promoting gender equality and improving learning outcomes for girls. The distribution of sanitary towels is expected to enhance attendance, participation, and overall performance in schools across Kitui County.
With this initiative, Hon. Kasalu demonstrates her commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for the girl-child, reinforcing her vision of a county where every child, regardless of gender, can pursue their dreams with dignity.
