A prominent theologian and activist, Francis Kauta, has formally petitioned the Ministry of Health to investigate claims by self-proclaimed prophet David Owuor, who recently addressed followers in Nakuru, asserting that he can heal serious medical conditions including HIV/AIDS, cancer, blindness, deafness, muteness, and other physical disabilities through faith healing.
In a letter dated 2nd January 2026, Kauta expressed concern that unverified claims of this nature pose a significant risk to public health. He noted that patients with chronic or life-threatening illnesses might abandon proven medical treatments in favour of faith-based interventions, potentially leading to preventable illness, drug resistance, and loss of life.
“Allowing unverified healing claims to circulate without scrutiny risks reversing the gains Kenya has made in public health, including access to antiretroviral therapy and cancer treatment programs,” Kauta said in the letter.
He also warned that such practices exhibit traits commonly associated with cultic movements, where followers are discouraged from seeking professional medical care.
Kauta has urged the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with relevant regulatory bodies, to investigate these claims and publicly clarify their medical validity. He also called for appropriate legal or regulatory action to protect the public from misinformation and potential harm.
The activist’s request emphasizes safeguarding public health, upholding medical ethics, and protecting vulnerable citizens from extraordinary claims presented without scientific evidence.
This comes amid growing concerns in Kenya over the rise of faith healers making medical claims that contradict scientific evidence, prompting calls from civil society for stricter regulation and oversight.
