Breaking news:Donkey meat intercepted in Kitui.

In a significant move to curb the illegal trade of donkey meat, security agencies intercepted a herd of 136 donkeys in the Mbondoni area of Mwingi West on Saturday afternoon.

The operation, which took place around 1:00 PM on December 20, 2025, led to the arrest of four men who were found driving the animals on foot. According to police reports, the suspects failed to produce the mandatory movement permits required by law for the transportation of livestock.

The four suspects were immediately apprehended and taken to the local police station, where they have been booked and processed for arraignment. Authorities confirmed that the animals are being held as investigations continue into their intended destination.

Following the interception, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Mbaya Kimwele, issued a sharp rebuke to those involved in the illicit trade.

”We wish to issue a stern warning to unscrupulous dealers who intend to illegally slaughter donkeys and sell the meat to unsuspecting members of the public,” Dr. Kimwele stated. “Such criminal activities will not be tolerated. Anyone found engaging in this illegal trade will be arrested and arraigned in court without hesitation.”

The government has intensified its surveillance to protect public health and livestock welfare. A multi-agency task force comprising the National Police Service, various county governments, and non-governmental organizations has been activated to monitor known routes and markets.

”We will not allow this illegal practice to continue,” Dr. Kimwele added. “A multi-agency approach has been put in place to close all loopholes and ensure full enforcement of the law. Those involved will face the full force of the law.”

The interception comes amid rising concerns over the hygiene and legality of donkey meat entering the local food chain. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious livestock movement to the authorities.
